The Permanent Residence Permit

Holders of a Permanent Residence Permit can both live and work on the island for a period of 20 years. The permit is renewable and the individual may change their status from investor, retiree or professional. To be eligible for a Permanent Residence Permit, you must:

  • Be an investor holding an Occupation Permit for a minimum of 3 years
  • Invest not less than Rs 375,000 in an activity in Mauritius
  • Be a self-employed professional possessing an Occupation Permit
  • Be a salaried professional in possession of an Occupation Permit
  • Be an individual with an Occupation Permit or a Residence Permit, making you eligible for a Permanent Residence Permit

The Occupation Permit

This permit is both a work permit and a residence permit that foreigners can apply for if they wish to come work and live in Mauritius. For professional needs, the Occupation Permit is now valid up to 10 years and can be renewed. To be eligible for an Occupation Permit, you must be an investor, a self-employed or a professional. Here is some additional information about this permit:

-The spouses of the Occupation Permit holder do not have to apply for the permit if they wish to work in Mauritius

-Self-employed foreigners holding an Occupation Permit can create a one-man company and even hire administrative staff if needed

-The maximum age of 24 years for dependent children is now not applicable

-A 10-year Family Occupation Permit has been created for foreigners who wish to contribute USD 250,000 to the Covid-19 Projects Development Fund

 

The Young Professional Occupation Permit (YPOP)

The Young Professional Occupation Permit is available to foreign students who studied in a tertiary institution in Mauritius. This permit is valid for a period of 3 years, depending on the duration of your contract of employment. To be eligible for a Young Professional Occupation Permit you must already complete at least an undergraduate degree in one of Mauritius’ tertiary institutions. The application for the permit must be for the field of studies below:

  • Fintech
  • Financial services
  • Biotechnology
  • Information technology
  • Robotics
  • Other fields approved by the Minister
